SPAM the TAM

You own the pipeline.
Not the mail server.

Here’s what the email terms mean for your team, and what to ask the person managing your setup.

Email essentials

SPF
Sender Policy Framework
The list of services allowed to send using your domain. Ask your DNS team to review it when you add or remove a sending platform.
Included in your public DNS check.
DKIM
DomainKeys Identified Mail
A signature attached to your email that receivers can verify. Your sending platform provides the DNS records needed to set it up.
Not measured by public DNS alone.
DMARC
Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance
Connects authentication to the address recipients see in the From field. Your policy tells receivers how to handle messages that fail those checks.
Included in your public DNS check.
MX
Mail Exchanger
The records that point incoming email to your mail provider. Have your email team review them if replies or incoming messages aren’t arriving.
Included in your public DNS check.
Reputation
Sender reputation
How mailbox providers assess your sending, including complaints and sending patterns. A clean DNS report cannot tell you whether your reputation is healthy.
Not measured by public DNS alone.
Placement
Inbox placement
Where a message lands after it is accepted. Your sending platform may say “delivered” even when the message ends up in spam.
Not measured by public DNS alone.
